Carolina Railhawks FC to Take on Rayados De Monterrey

The Carolina RailHawks professional soccer team announced today that they will play yet another historic international exhibition match. This time it will be against the Mexican Premier Divisions’ Rayados de Monterrey at WakeMed Soccer Park on Sunday July 20th at 4 p.m.

Tecate will be the presenting sponsor of this classic matchup. Tickets will start as low as $10 for standing room only and then reserved seating will be $25 and $35 while club seats will be $50. As an innovative sports franchise, the Carolina RailHawks have added a new twist to this match in “on-field” seating. Only 100 of the seats are available and will be directly on the field just a few feet from the action! These special seats will be $100.

All Tickets will be available Friday June 6th at 10:00 a.m. at the LGFCU Box Office at WakeMed Soccer Park or by calling the RailHawks ticket office at 919-859-KICK. Fans can also log onto or call ticketmaster at 919-834-4000. “This match continues a tradition we started last year with the Cruz Azul match,” said Carolina RailHawks Owner Brian Wellman. “We want to show the entire Hispanic community how much we value and appreciate their continued support by bringing another world class Mexican team into WakeMed Soccer Park. This is our way of saying thank you.”

“In 2007 the RailHawks were largely unknown as a first year club. But, after we hosted Mexican powerhouse Cruz Azul in front of a sellout crowd of over 8,500 frantic fans, things literally changed overnight,” said Wellman. “Even though we fell 2-0 in that match, the skill and class that we exhibited proved to the savvy Hispanic community that the RailHawks are a world class team both on and off of the field, and that soccer at the highest level now lives strong in the Triangle.” “Every time we have the chance to play teams like this it’s a great experience,” said RailHawks Head Coach Scott Schweitzer. “It’s good for the team as they can measure up to other professional teams from around the world and it’s good for our fans which are treated to a phenomenal show of skills and international soccer. We look forward to playing a great match.” “We knew after a long and grueling first season with multiple competitions that we needed to add depth and quality,” said General Manager and Owner Chris Economides. “So we signed three outstanding Hispanic players in Martin Nuñez (Uruguay), Mauricio Segovia (Chile), and Richard Perdomo (Honduras). These players have enhanced our style of play by adding technical ability and that certain flair that Hispanic players are known for.”

Club de Futbol Monterrey is a Mexican soccer club from Monterrey, Nuevo León, in the northeast of the country, and is also the oldest team from the state. They are owned by FEMSA, Mexico's largest beverage company and the parent company of Tecate. The team is popularly known as Los Rayados (the striped ones) for the striped uniform they wear. Monterrey had an impressive run in the 2008 Clausura tournament reaching the semifinal round of the playoffs only to fall to the eventual champions Santos Laguna in penalty kicks. They are led by league leading scorer and Chilean International forward Humberto Suazo as well as Mexican International Jared Borgetti. They are coached by former Mexican National Team Coach Ricardo La Volpe.

Carolina RailHawks FC is in its second season and competes in the USL First Division. In 2007, its first season, the RailHawks qualified for the league play-offs falling to the eventual champion Seattle Sounders in a tough two game series. The RailHawks also made an unprecedented run to the US Open Cup semi finals; along the way the RailHawks defeated the Chicago Fire 1-0 of the MLS. In the semi-finals the RailHawks were defeated 2-1 in extra time by the eventual champions the New England Revolution, also of the MLS. This season the RailHawks have played 8 matches and have lost only once so far. The head coach of the RailHawks is Scott Schweitzer and the General Manager is Chris Economides.
