February 2010 Winter has officially come
to Greater Raleigh, but that doesn't mean events are cooling
off. Find something for everyone with exhibits, theatre, music,
shopping and even a little romance.
Valentine's Memories
Share Valentine’s Day weekend with someone special by
enjoying a candlelit dinner at one of downtown Raleigh’s
award-winning restaurants like Bogart’s American Grill,
Sullivan’s Steakhouse or the Irregardless Café.
Afterward hop on the R-LINE, downtown Raleigh’s FREE circulator
service, to one of the area’s performance venues for a
live show. At the Progress Energy Center for the Performing
Arts comedian Bill Maher (2/12-13) brings his
brand of “Politically Incorrect” comedy to the stage,
the N.C. Symphony performs A Broadway Romance (2/14),
featuring 37 songs from 13 Broadway musicals and a collection
of loved musical acts including The Tams perform during A
Valentine’s Day Beach and Oldies Show (2/14).
Skate or sled with your sweetie (and even get a free rickshaw
or carriage ride) during AT&T Winterfest at City
Plaza (through 2/15) or enjoy live music at The Lincoln
Theatre with Drive-By Truckers (2/12-13). Triangle

Pigskin,Pucks and Hoops
One dozen doughnuts and a
four-mile road race – one doesn’t go with the other,
right? Well, they do in Raleigh during the annual Krispy
Kreme Challenge (2/6), a student-run event benefitting
the N.C. Children’s Hospital. No matter what team you
root for Superbowl Sunday (2/7) is one of sports’
most-watched events. This year take in the game with specials
at some of the area’s favorite sports bars, restaurants
and clubs like the Oxford, Woody’s Bar & Grill, Legends
and Rum Runners. The Carolina Hurricanes lace up their skates
against the Florida Panthers (2/9), Buffalo
Sabres (2/11) and the New Jersey Devils (2/13)
while N.C. State University men’s basketball takes on
rivals Virginia Tech (2/10), Maryland
(2/17) and Wake Forest (2/20); both
teams play at the RBC Center. The World’s Toughest
Rodeo (2/6) brings family entertainment to the RBC
Center with bull riding, barrel racing, cowboys, cowgirls and

Arena and Festival Excitement
From family-friendly performances to laugh-out-loud comedy, the Raleigh area is the place to be for a month of special events. The RBC Center presents Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family (2/3-5) and the Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus (2/24-28) presents a mind-blowing, thrill-filled circus spectacular. The N.C. Auto Expo (2/11-14), The Carolina Power and Sailboat Show (2/19-21) and the 21st Annual RV and Camping Show (2/26-28) showcase hundreds of cars, trucks, boats and camping gear at the N.C. State Fairgrounds. The Raleigh Convention Center gets into the world of water sports during the 18th Annual Raleigh Convention Center Boat Show (2/12-14). The 11th Annual African American Celebration (2/20) in Cary honors Black History Month with music, lectures, family programs and an African-American Literary Tea (2/22). Learn more

Performing Arts
Performances abound on the calendar this February with shows catering to children, adults, families and couples. The Cary Players present one-act stories celebrating the charm, magic and mystery of love in Love Bits and Bites: The 5th Dimension (2/12-14, 2/20-21). The thin line between fantasy and reality is explored in the chilling mystery story of Veronica's Room (2/12-28) at the Raleigh Little Theatre. Theatre in the Park presents the regional premiere of Don't Cry For Me Margaret Mitchell (2/12-14 & 2/18-21), a hilarious, historically-based look into what might have happened during the screenwriting process for Gone with the Wind. Ballet Folklorico de Mexico (2/21) aims to educate audiences with the music, dance and folklore of Mexico, while the Carolina Ballet dances the classic Cinderella (2/18-3/7). N.C. State University Theatre puts a unique spin on the fairy tales we know by heart by performing Into the Woods (2/17-21), and the N.C. Theatre performs a musical about six unemployed steel workers from Buffalo in The Full Monty (2/27-3/7). Learn more

No matter what's on your iPod there is a band and a concert in the Raleigh area to fit your musical tastes. "I've Got a Feeling" that the Black Eyed Peas (2/19) will play to a packed house at the RBC Center, while the Raleigh Blues Festival (2/21) brings together some of the country's best blues musicians. Get The Led Out: The American Led Zeppelin (2/20) pays homage to the British super group, while Pinecone presents the documentary Homemade American Music (2/14) at the N.C. Museum of History and Allen Toussaint (2/18) one of America's most prolific jazz musicians. The N.C. Symphony welcomes Grammy Hall of Fame member Johnny Mathis (2/27-28) for a one-night-only performance of his classic hits. Learn more

Museums
Enter the world of sharks through a massive set of jaws to
the special exhibit, Megalodon: Largest Shark that Ever
Lived (2/13-5/9) at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences.
The exhibit showcases both fossil and modern shark specimens,
as well as full-scale models from several collections. Megalodon
urges visitors to discover this shark’s history and the
world it inhabited, including its physiology, diet, lifespan,
relatives, neighbors, evolution and extinction. The exhibit
also provides details on how to improve the health of our oceans
and survival of threatened species. Marbles Kids Museum teaches
children the importance of saving money during Moneypalooza
(ongoing), and next door at the Wachovia IMAX
Theatre, the blockbuster Avatar 3D,Van Gogh: Brush
with Genius and Under the Sea 3D are just a few of the larger-than-life
films playing. At 50 Barbie hasn’t slowed down a bit,
and the N.C. Museum of History provides a glimpse of the history
and evolution of the American icon and business phenomenon during
a small exhibition Barbie: Fabulous at 50 (ongoing).
