Freedom Ring
Greater Raleigh shows its patriotic side with a never-ending choice
of family friendly events - all for FREE! Independence Day highlights
include patriot picnics, historic reenactments, family concerts and
everyone’s favorite – fireworks, at the N.C. State Capitol,
Cary’s Bond Park and the N.C. State Fairgrounds, while the Joel
Lane House and Mordecai Historic Park look back in history with home
tours. Koka Booth Amphitheatre and the N.C. Symphony celebrate with
a free Summerfest concert and fireworks. The Carolina Mudcats host
the Tennessee Smokies for AA Baseball action and end the night with
a spectacular fireworks display at Five County Stadium. Cary’s
Sertoma Amphitheatre presents the patriotic play We the People
and the neighboring towns of Apex, Fuquay Varina and Wake Forest celebrate

Don't Stop the Music
Make sure your summer rocks by experiencing the hottest concerts and
performances in the Carolinas. Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion at
Walnut Creek brings high energy performances from the Dave
Matthews Band (7/2), Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
(7/12), Brad Paisley (7/19), Projekt
Revolution Tour (7/25), Maroon 5 and Counting Crows
(7/29) and the Jonas Brothers and Avril Levigne (7/30).
The RBC Center welcomes music legends Robert Plant and Allison Krauss
during the Raising Sand Tour (7/11). Cary’s
Koka Booth Amphitheatre is home to the N.C. Symphony’s
Summerfest Series featuring different themes such as Blues
in the Night (7/12) and A Tribute to the Eagles (7/19).
Booth Amphitheatre also welcomes the Avett Brothers (7/29)
and Sound Tribe Sector 9/Umphrey’s McGee (7/31).
Downtown Raleigh’s Moore Square is the place to be when multiple
bands take the stage for the free, all-day music festival Bud
Light Downtown Live (7/12, 7/26). The N.C. Museum of Art
continues their outdoor concert series with BeauSoleil (7/12)
and Les Primitifs du Futur (7/19).

Now Playing
Beat the heat and take in a performance by one of the area’s
nationally known performing arts groups. Hot Summer Nights at the
Kennedy is back at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts
with the American classic, True West (7/2-7/13)
and the unconventional love story Skylight
(7/23-8/3). The N.C. Theatre takes the audience to
the magical world of Never Never Land during the performance of Peter

Blockbuster Exhibitions
Discover the greatest archeological treasures ever unearthed –
the Dead Sea Scrolls (6/28-12/28) at the N.C. Museum
of Natural Sciences. This blockbuster exhibition will display 12 authentic
scrolls, representing portions of the Biblical books of Genesis, Isaiah,
Deuteronomy, Exodus and others. Also on display will be more than
100 ancient artifacts, non-biblical manuscripts, religious writings
and prayer texts. In addition, the museum will also explore scientific
conservation and preservation of the Scrolls. The N.C. Museum of Natural
Sciences isn’t the only museum with exhibits worth exploring;
the N.C. Museum of Art addresses global displacement during Far
From Home (through 7/13), and the N.C. Museum of History
celebrates waterfowl culture with Art-Duck O (ongoing).
Take in the five-story screen at The Wachovia Imax Theatre at Marbles
Kids Museum with movies like Bugs 3D! and Speed

Great Outdoors
Often called a “park with a city in it,” the Greater Raleigh
area celebrates the outdoors with numerous festivals, garden tours,
athletic events and farmers markets.Take a stroll through fresh fruit,
produce, flowers and homemade goodies at downtown Raleigh’s
Moore Square Farmers Market (Wednesdays) or at the
N.C. State Farmers Market (daily) where farmers from around
the state sell their homegrown products. Enjoy a movie under the stars
during the N.C. Museums of Art’s Movies on the Lawn
(7/11, 7/18, 7/25, 7/26) or at Koka Booth Amphitheatre’s
Movies by Moonlight (7/3, 7/10, 7/24).
