Raleigh, home to more than 30 FREE attractions, is a perfect destination when trying to save money to fill up those gas tanks. Take in an exhibit or free guided tour at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences or NC Museum of Art. Festivals abound in Greater Raleigh - from celebrating the arts to eating well, there is a celebration to entertain all ages! Explore historic homes during the 4th Annual Downtown Home Tour (5/17) or glorious gardens during the Historic Oakwood Garden Tour and Victorian Tea (5/3-5/4). Greater Raleigh sets the stage for a month of incredible performances. Kick off the month at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts with the farewell performance of Riverdance (4/29-5/4) or laugh yourself silly during Broadway's smash-hit and 2004 Tony Award® winner for best musical, best score and best book Avenue Q (5/6-5/11). Experience the elegance and grace of the Carolina Ballet during the world premiere of Sleeping Beauty (5/15-18). Lawn Seats
The Raleigh area is known as a premier live music destination and May starts the 2008 concert season off with more than 10 concerts ranging from hip hop to traditional folk music. The RBC Center provides a stage for Van Halen (5/5) while the Time Warner Music Pavilion at Walnut Creek welcomes the hip hop tunes of Kanye West (5/9) and the country ballads of Tim McGraw and Jason Aldean (5/17) while James Taylor and His Band of Legends return to their Carolina roots (5/28). Cary's Koka Booth Amphitheatre prepares for Duran Duran (5/21) while the North Carolina Symphony tunes their instruments for the 11th Annual Play with the Pros (5/31). Downtown Raleigh also gets in on the act with the return of the FREE multi-act, all-day festival Bud Light Downtown Live (5/31) at Moore Square and Tony Trischka and Bela Fleck perform twin banjo bluegrass at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts (5/17). Take Me Out to the Ball Game(s)
The temperature isn't the only thing to rise in May, Raleigh's sporting scene continues to heat up with a roster of matchups. The Carolina Mudcats (5/1-3, 5/10-14, 5/21-25), Greater Raleigh's AA baseball team, are in full swing while across town the UNC Tarheel Baseball (5/6-7, 5/13) team, continue to make themselves at home at USA Baseball's National Training Complex in Cary. Grab a seat in the stands and cheer on the Carolina Railhawks (5/16, 5/18, 5/24, 5/28), professional soccer team as they "bend it like Beckham" to chase the USL first division championship title. Stylish Deals
Summer is right around the corner and now is the best time to take a trip to one of Greater Raleigh's ten major shopping destinations. You'll be sure to find fashions that will keep you looking cool when the weather gets HOT HOT HOT! While you're in town there are a few other shopping events thatyou don't want to miss including the Carolina Kids Expo & Baby Show (5/10-11) at the NC State Fairgrounds, as well as the weekly NC State Flea Market. If spring cleaning makes you want to redecorate stop by the ASID Designer Showhouse (5/10 - 6/1) to get some ideas from some of the state's interior design experts during this three week long decorating extravaganza. If it's fresh produce you're in the mood to shop for why not stop at one of Raleigh's Farmers Markets including the Moore Square Farmers Market held every Wednesday or the Farmer's Market at North Hills every Saturday through out the summer.
