From kid-friendly activities to spooky haunted houses, the Raleigh
area pulls out all the stops for a festive Halloween. At the State
Farmers Market, the Great Pumpkin Contest (10/9)
brings out the best jack-o-lanterns in town, while Koka Booth Amphitheatre
hosts a unique Celtic Harvest (10/25). Experts
explore the holiday’s traditions at the NC Museum of Natural
Sciences Croctoberfest! (10/25), while visitors
get a dose of creepy fun at the NC State Capitol’s Scare
on the Square (10/25).

Take
Time for a Great Time
Oreo® cookies, Snickers® and giant turkey legs – these
are all proof that everything's better deep-fried. Both good food
and good times will be at your fingertips during the North
Carolina State Fair (10/16-10/26), the state’s largest
annual event. Whether you like thrilling rides, unique exhibits, live
entertainment or you simply want to indulge in your favorite fair
treat, a good time will be had by all. This year’s entertainment

The
Curtain Rises
Comedy, tragedy and a little mischief are just some of the story lines
in a month full of stellar performances. Stagelight Productions performs
the satirical musical, TomFoolery (10/3-10/26)
and Theatre in the Park brings back the hilarious Briarpatch
(through 10/4). The North Carolina Theatre performs
the classic Yeston & Kopit’s Phantom (10/17-10/26)
and Capital Opera presents Carmen (10/17-10/19).
The Carolina Ballet, in conjunction with Durham’s Nasher Museum
of Art, presents the world premiere of Don Quixote (10/9-10/12).
Tyler Perry brings his newest stage production, The Marriage
Counselor (10/28-10/29), a unique profile of life’s
greatest institution to the RBC Center.

Rock-tober
Just because Fall has officially arrived doesn’t mean the area’s
concert scene is slowing down. Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion at
Walnut Creek welcomes the Allman Brothers Band with Phil Lesh
and Friends (10/3) and country’s reigning queen Martina
McBride (10/4). Michael Buble (10/3) sings
timeless classics like ‘Lost’ at the RBC Center. PineCone
presents Leroy Savage Group (10/9) best known as
the “Father of Blues” for his introduction of folk and
rock songs into bluegrass. Ray LaMontagne (10/16)
will be taking the stage at Meymandi Concert Hall, and don’t
forget Great Big Sea (10/29) at AJ Fletcher Opera
Theater; both theaters are at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing

Festivals & Events
The past comes to life during Walking with Dinosaurs (10/22-10/26)
where renowned designers have worked with scientists to create 15
life-sized dinosaurs, including that terror of the ancient terrain,
Tyrannosaurus-Rex! They represent state-of-the-art, 360-degree, animatronic
technology going beyond current techniques that have been developed
for the film and TV industries. Based on the award-winning BBC series,
WALKING WITH DINOSAURS - THE LIVE EXPERIENCE, is
both a study in natural history and an engaging, innovative piece

Sway to the smooth notes of Jazz at the Triangle Jazz Festival
(10/4)! Enjoy legendary jazz artists as they entertain you
with their smooth, funk, contemporary, fusion and straight jazz sounds!
Diwali: Festival of Lights (10/11) will feature an
all-day cultural program that celebrates the balance between an array
of performing art forms and aims to bring the highest quality of programs
to the stage while promoting local talent. Jordan Lake Arts
& Music Festival (10/4- 10/5) will have five stages,
18 bands, dance, an art show, food and activities for the kids! Indulge
your creative side at the Autumn Arts & Crafts Expo (10/11)
at Jordan Hall Arts Center.

Museum Exhibitions
Take
time to explore the greatest archeological treasures ever discovered
– the Dead Sea Scrolls (through 12/28) at the
N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences. This blockbuster exhibition displays
12 authentic scrolls, representing portions of the Biblical books
of Genesis, Isaiah, Deuteronomy, Exodus and others. Also on display
are more than 100 ancient artifacts, non-biblical manuscripts, religious
writings and prayer texts. In addition, the museum will describe scientific
conservation and preservation of the Scrolls. The N.C. Museum of Natural
Sciences isn’t the only museum with worth exploring; the N.C.
Museum of Art showcases Modern American Paintings (ongoing)
and the N.C. Museum of History celebrates waterfowl culture with Art-Duck
O (ongoing). The [R]evolution of Media (ongoing)
at the Raleigh City Museum made its debut alongside the grand opening
of Raleigh’s new convention center. This informative new exhibit
will examine the early histories of how newspaper/radio/television
each got their start, the major players in each of the industries,
the early and modern day technologies that have pushed the evolution
of the fields, and include spotlights on interesting sub-stories in

Shopping
With
the wide array of shopping in the Raleigh area, you can shop until
you drop! A Shopping SPREE! (10/1-10/5) will be held at the newly
constructed Raleigh Convention Center in downtown Raleigh and will
host a number of special parties and shopping events that shoppers
look forward to from year to year. Don’t stop there, the Greater
Raleigh area is known for its 10 major shopping destinations, and
the schedule of events this October proves that you can find everything
from bridal gowns to exotic animals all at your convenience. The N.C.
State Fairgrounds hosts some of the largest consumer shows in the
state including a weekly Flea Market (Saturdays and Sundays).
Greater Raleigh is also home to some of the best produce around. Be
sure to check out the Moore Square Farmer’s Market (Wednesdays)
and the NC State Farmer’s Market (daily).

Sports
Greater Raleigh is the place to be for sports fans. Football season
is in full swing, and Carter Finley Stadium is the perfect arena to
watch NC State take on Boston College (10/4)
and Florida State (10/16). The storm is coming as
the Carolina Hurricanes take on the Nashville Predators (10/5),
the Florida Panthers (10/10) and the Detroit
Red Wings (10/13) this month. If you enjoyed watching the
2008 Olympics in Beijing, imagine having the opportunity to watch
those same athletes in person. This October, you can! The
Tour of Gymnastic Superstars (10/19) is coming to Raleigh’s
RBC Center and bringing the country’s most celebrated gymnasts
including 2008 All-Around Olympic Gold Medalist Nastia Liukin, 2008
All-Around Olympic Silver Medalist Shawn Johnson, 2008 Silver Medalist
Chellsie Memmel, plus Jonathan Horton, Kevin Tan Joe Hagerty and Justin
Spring from the men’s Bronze winning Olympic team. The RBC Center
will also be hosting the Carolina Crown (10/11),
the ultimate in mixed martial arts (MMA) cage-fighting. Top fighters
from all over the country will make their way to Raleigh for the largest
