Founded in 1910 and located in the Method community, a 69-acre, Reconstruction-era village started by freedmen Jesse Mason and Isaac O’Kelly. The boarding school was among the first rural high schools for African Americans in North Carolina, providing its students with a sound education and the entire community with new carpenters, laundresses, seamstresses and teachers. Berry O’Kelly (1861-1931) was a Raleigh business leader. The school closed in 1966, and its buildings were demolished in 1969.
