    Lightner Funeral Home
    Raleigh, NC 27601

Calvin E. Lightner (1877-1960) moved to Raleigh in 1898 to attend Shaw University. He began his business in 1908, and his long career included real estate development (most notably along Raleigh’s black main street), teaching and undertaking (founding a funeral home in 1911). Lightner also ran for City Council in a notable 1919 race. (His son Clarence E. Lightner became Raleigh’s first popularly elected mayor in 1973.) Lightner Funeral Home still occupies the 1926 Capehart-Lightner House, purchased in 1941. Lightner’s own 1907 home at 419 S. East St. was demolished in 1990.
