About

Black members of the First Baptist Church on N. Salisbury St., established in 1812 as a multiracial congregation, requested separation in 1868 to form their own church and acquired the present lot across from the North Carolina State Capitol in the 1870s. The present 1904 church is a brick, gable-roofed building dominated by a square, brick tower and topped by a Gothic spire.
