James H. Young Highway Historical Marker

Born near Henderson, N.C., just before the Civil War, James H. Young (1860-1921) was educated at Shaw University then hired to work in internal revenue collection. Young became involved in Republican Party politics, then other government and political work followed, including service in the state legislature. Young was owner and editor of the “Raleigh Gazette,” the principal voice of black politics in the state from 1893 to 1898, and later colonel of a black regiment organized for the Spanish-American War.
