N.C. and World War I Exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of History

  • 8726 Cypress Club Dr.
    Raleigh, NC 27615

Known for being “cutting edge, inspiring, daring, experimental and forward-thinking,” the city of Raleigh is home to the old (Capitol, Executive Mansion, Shaw University) and the new (Red Hat, Citrix, the James B. Hunt Jr. Library). The city embraces and celebrates it all. This driving tour will provide a glimpse into N.C.'s dynamic capital city, whetting your appetite to return to see more.

The highlight of this tour is a visit to the World War I Exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of History. Celebrating the centennial of the U.S. entry into World War I, this unique exhibit focuses on N.C.'s role in the fighting that took place on the Western Front in France and Belgium. With more than 500 artifacts, period photography and a trench diorama, the 6,500-square-foot exhibit is an interactive multimedia display that features European and N.C. soldiers and citizens telling the stories of ordinary men and women of the War to End All Wars. Martha Quillin wrote for The News & Observer, “Artifact displays are built into the trench walls, and sensors detect visitors’ movements to set off videos and sound effects. This idea is to feel rather than read about what it was like to spend weeks or months fighting a battle from a hole in the ground.” This visit to the museum will include the exhibit, a canteen lunch served mess hall-style and free time to peruse the North Carolina Museum of History’s wonderful gift shop.

The tour lasts four hours. Tours must be booked at least 30 days in advance. Minimum 10 people per group. Canteen lunch only available Mon.-Fri. For questions or to book experience, please contact visit NC concierge at 919.302.0574.
