The N.C. Museum of Art’s Modern and Contemporary Gallery has works by African-American artists including Romare Bearden, John Biggers, Aaron Douglas, Minnie Evans and Jacob Lawrence. The museum’s African Gallery preserves historical material from the 19th and 20th centuries and also showcases particular ethnic styles. A defining acquisition is Skunder Boghossian’s “Night Flight of Dread and Delight” (1964). Free admission. Hours: Tues.-Thurs., 10am-5pm; Fri., 10am-9pm; Sat.-Sun., 10am-5pm.
