About

A 30-block area that is Raleigh’s largest, historically Black neighborhood. It developed mainly from 1865 to 1940. The core neighborhood of South Park, a 1907 subdivision, was partly developed by Black educator and businessman Dr. Edward Johnson. Shaw University was also key to the growth of the area, which still features historic shotgun houses and triple-A cottages as well as side-gabled, front-gabled and hipped-roof homes.
