Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee Highway Historical Marker

  • S. Wilmington St.
    Raleigh, NC 27601

Two months after Woolworth sit-ins in nearby Durham and Greensboro, about 150 student leaders from 10 states met at Shaw University for the Southwide Leadership Conference on Nonviolent Resistance to Segregation, Apr. 15-17, 1960. The session, convened by the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, ultimately created the “Temporary Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee” (later SNCC). The organization’s members became frontline leaders in the civil rights movement. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., visiting on Apr. 16, also spoke to 1,600 assembled at nearby Memorial Auditorium.
