The Grande Dame of Blount St.: North Carolina Executive Mansion

  • 8726 Cypress Club Dr.
    Raleigh, NC 27615

Beginning this immersion experience into N.C.'s dynamic capital city with a driving tour lays the foundation for understanding the evolution of this vibrant city. Raleigh's original city plan (drawn in 1792) was modeled on that of Philadelphia, with a central square and four main streets extending like the points of the compass. This driving tour of the city's core will provide the framework for this exploration of museums, galleries, government and historic sites, as well as the thriving commercial and business district.

The first stop will be the North Carolina Executive Mansion and Gardens.* Built in the late 19th century, the North Carolina Governor's Mansion is one of the finest examples of Queen Anne Victorian architecture in the state. Native materials—bricks molded from Wake County red clay, oak and heart pine, sandstone and marble—were used throughout the construction of this 35,000-square-foot residence that has been home to 30 governors. Designed by the prominent architect Samuel Sloan, the mansion is one of the state's architectural gems and is filled with fine 18th- and 19th-century N.C. furnishings and art. Situated on 4.6 acres in the heart of downtown Raleigh, it is the third-largest governor's residence in the U.S.

Upon leaving the mansion you will continue to explore the city by stopping on North Carolina State University's main campus. Then, continuing west, Meredith College's campus comes into view followed by the North Carolina State University School of Veterinary Medicine. Returning downtown you will then visit one of the city's coworking spaces** where the whole concept of “the office” is being redefined. Your immersion experience into N.C.'s capital city will inspire and invigorate you, whetting your appetite to return to the city to see more.

The tour lasts four hours. Tours must be booked at least 30 days in advance. Minimum 10 people per group. For questions or to book experience, please contact visit NC concierge at 919.302.0574.

*Adult tours may be scheduled on Wed. and Thurs. only during the public tour season in the spring and fall. Garden tours are also available on a limited basis. The holiday open house schedule will be announced in late summer. **If a garden tour is included while at the Governor's Mansion, time will not allow a visit to a coworking space.
