RALEIGH, N.C. (August 2005) --BugFest!, the nation's largest single-day bug event, takes center stage at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh on Saturday, August 13, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Bugs of all sizes, shapes and colors will creep and crawl into all four floors of the museum, the adjacent Bicentennial Plaza and State Capitol area. Celebrating its ninth year, BugFest! has routinely attracted more than 20,000 visitors and the best part: it offers free admission.

During the day, children and adults can cheer on defending champion racer "Roachard Petty" in the Roachingham 500, learn about insects, arachnids and crustaceans from entomology experts and meet the amazing bee-bearded man! This ongoing demonstration allows the public to understand the "buzz" around the importance of the queen bee to her hive.

Lunch is served buffet-style at Cafe Insecta , giving visitors a chance to have a helping of critter-filled concoctions such as Ant-chiladas and Hushed Grubbies. For dessert, try a tasty, worm-fortified serving of Banana Worm Nut Bread or Superworm Spice Cake. Traditional food and drink is available for the squeamish.

After lunch, green thumbs can head outside to the Garden Zone to learn how to take care of a garden by inviting the "good" bugs in and banishing those that are harmful. Tips on how to identify these bugs and protect plants will also be discussed. This exhibit is sponsored by the Terminix Co. of Eastern North Carolina-Nimocks Group.

Young entomology enthusiasts are welcome to hang out in the KidsZone and race their siblings and friends through an inflatable centipede. They can also participate in numerous arts and crafts activities taking place on the State Capitol grounds, where artist Sandy Feat will create a "bugged-out" sand sculpture.

BugFest! will extend later than in previous years, with Twilight BugFest! featuring jazz music and an unforgettable dining experience. Between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., local chefs will whip up some deliciously buggy cuisine and invite visitors to dine on their insect-inspired entrees.
