This year's State Fair will have an "American Idol" feel, with several members of the hit show appearing on stage.

Ruben Studdard, the 2003 "American Idol" winner, is scheduled to perform at Oct. 14.

Albemarle native Kellie Pickler will perform hits from her debut album on Oct. 16, Chris Daughtry, who is from Guilford County, is scheduled to appear on Oct. 20. Both competed in the 2006 season.

Other music stars slated to appear are Sara Evans, Josh Turner, Trace Adkins and MercyMe.

The 2007 festival will provide a flair for Southern food as celebrity chef Paula Deen will bring her Southern charm and savvy on Oct. 17.

The 2007 State Fair will run from Oct. 12 to Oct. 21.

Dorton Arena hosts a wide array of action-packed sporting events. Since it opened in 1952, Dorton Arena has been home to many sporting activities, both amateur and professional. Year-round amateur sporting events at Dorton Arena range from Special Olympics Opening Ceremonies, boxing, youth wrestling, cheerleading, colorguard band, and karate/martial arts competitions to collegiate and And1 basketball. Dorton has been a hub of sports activity, including events such as the 1997 World Figure Skating Champions Tour and many professional sports.

•In 1963 professional wrestling became the arena's first year-round sporting entertainment event, and the series continued through the next two decades.
•The Carolina Cougars, an American Basketball Association affiliate, played several home games at Dorton Arena from 1969 - 1974 and achieved number one status in the Eastern Division in 1973.
•The Raleigh Bullfrogs, a member of the Global Basketball Association, hosted their 1991-92 basketball season in the Arena.
•Dorton Arena was also home to the Raleigh Cougars, United States Basketball League, during their 1997 - 1999 seasons.
•The Raleigh Ice Caps, a professional hockey team in the East Coast Hockey League, played at Dorton in 1991 and 1998.
•The Cobras (Arena Football League) maintained their offices and practice field at Dorton (games were played at RBC Center) from 2001-2002.
•Dorton Arena was home to the Raleigh Rebels, American Indoor Arena Football League during their 2006 season.
•The Carolina Rollergirls brought Flat Track Roller Derby competition to Dorton Arena in the Fall of 2006. Ten All-Star Inter-league Bouts are scheduled for the 2008 Season in Dorton Arena. Carolina Roller Derby, Inc. is an affiliate of the Women's Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) and endorsed by USSAR.
