Matisse, Picasso and the School of Paris

October 10, 2004- January 16, 2005

Have a brush with brilliance. Matisse, Picasso and the School of Paris exhibition will be at the North Carolina Museum of Art from October 10 to January 16.

This long-awaited exhibition features many works that have never been seen in the Southeast and explores the vibrant creativity of the artists who made Paris the center of modern art and culture from the late 19th century to the outbreak of the Second World War.

Matisse, Picasso and the School of Paris features paintings, sculptures and works on paper selected from the Baltimore Museum of Art’s rich and extensive holdings. Many of the works come from the renowned collection of Etta and Claribel Cone, whose family fortune derived in part from textile mills in the Carolinas.

Artists featured in the exhibition include Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cézanne, Bonnard, Monet, Rodin, Degas, Modigliani, Braque, Léger and Giacometti. However, star billing is given to Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, the preeminent masters of French modernism and special favorites of the Cone Sisters, represented by 34 paintings, sculptures and drawings. One can contemplate the calm, seemingly effortless elegance of their art, or simply revel in the sensuality of Matisse’s color and the commanding assurance of Picasso’s drawing.
