Downtown Streets Become Two-Way

THERE’S MORE TO MAKING A STREET TWO-WAY THAN JUST MARKING
In anticipation of the opening of the Raleigh Convention Center, Marriot Center City hotel and other development of the downtown’s southend, the City has converted portions of South Street and Lenoir Street to two-way traffic.
Lenoir Street was converted to two-way traffic from Wilmington Street to South Saunders Street and South Street now has two-way traffic from Wilmington Street to Dawson Street.
While it seems simple, converting the streets meant more than painting lines. The traffic signals were replaced and new metal poles with mast arms were installed at intersections. The signal controllers were upgraded to be consistent with the upcoming city-wide traffic control system. The pedestrian crossing signal heads were upgraded to LED countdown signals and a traffic signal was added at the intersection of Fayetteville Street and Lenoir Street.
Pavement markings and traffic signs were changed to reflect the new two-way pattern. To accommodate smooth traffic flow, the actual number of travel lanes has not decreased significantly.
With the completion of the Lenoir Street and South Street conversion some onstreet parking was removed on the north side of South Street between Wilmington Street and Salisbury Street and two spaces on Lenoir Street between West Street and South Saunders Street. However, several two-hour parking zones are now in locations that did not allow parking in the past.
There are two-hour parking zones on Lenoir Street between South Saunders Street and Dawson Street and on South Street between Dawson Street and Salisbury Street. There are new parking zones in front of the new Raleigh Convention Center.
All the construction in the area did take its toll on the road surface. The City of Raleigh Public Works Department Street Maintenance Division resurfaced the streets as a part of the City’s annual resurfacing contract. The total cost of the two-way conversion project is approximately $680,000 with the cost of the resurfacing being approximately $100,000.
