A 2.5-hour sightseeing and historical tour de force! Tobacco Road Tours take you to where Raleigh’s roots began & where the City has evolved today.
North Carolina’s “Triangle”, with some of the United States' best historical markers, culture, architecture, food, and stories await you as we travel the “City of Oaks” on TRT’s Historic Raleigh tour.
Created as one Americas earliest planned cities, Raleigh was established in 1792 as the permanent seat of government for the state of North Carolina.
Testimonial: “The owner/driver/guide (I think his name is Brad) was great. Very knowledgeable, amusing, considerate, flexible. I would definitely recommend it.”
Carved out of an oak forest on 1,000 acres of land purchased from Wake County plantation owner Joel Lane. The new town struggled in its early years, hampered by poor transportation modes, a lack of economic enterprises beyond state government in 1831 the loss of the original statehouse in a disastrous fire. Following the civil war, the city slowly recovered economically, as its main retail venue Fayetteville Street became the commercial capital in eastern North Carolina. The advent of the streetcar system in the 1880s and the establishment of no fewer than 6 institutions of higher learning by 1899 made possible a comfortably middle-class population in the absence of heavy industry and homegrown industry magnets.
The tour features four main sections of downtown Raleigh: State Capitol, Historic Mordecai Park, a former 5,000-acre plantation, Raleigh City Market, the City of Raleigh’s Pullen Park, North Carolina’s first public park established in 1887 as well as a visit to the largest Victorian neighborhoods in America.
How about Muscadine wine? North Carolina is home to the largest producer of Cool, Sweet and Easy wines made from the Muscadine grape. Ever try a glass with NC BBQ? OMG!
So how is a Capital City like Raleigh born? We’ll explain this and you will hear the story of Isaac Hunter’s Tavern where a drink called “Cherry Bounce” was served to the commissioners of the state who were trying to select the land where the permanent seat of Government would be located! Imagine Bourbon, fresh cherries (with the pits) fermented with mulling spices, YUM!

Testimonial: Learning is fun!!
“Had the opportunity to take two wonderful tours recently of Raleigh, NC with Tobacco Road Tours. The first tour was a delightful driving adventure learning all about the history of Raleigh and its beginnings with a variety of stops along the way. Our host, Brad was very lively and shared so much information with us and made the tour so much fun. The next night I took the evening Haunted Adventures tour. That was a great night time walking tour of downtown and city landmarks. We would never do that in Los Angeles!!! I had such a great time on my tours and I really enjoyed being a tourist and highly recommend spending time taking a tour when in Raleigh with Tobacco Road Tours.”
