Leela Foundation is proud to host “Master Strokes 2025”. Step into the vibrant world of Mithila art (also known as Madhubani), an intricate and deeply symbolic folk art tradition from Bihar, India. What’s included - the origins and evolution of Mithila art, natural motifs: flora, fauna, border designs, and pattern work. Information about the various techniques - Kachni (line work), Bharni (color fill) and Godna (tattoo-inspired motifs). Hands-on sessions guided by master Mithila artist, Mahalaxmi Karn. Composition, planning, and creating your own Mithila style artwork. Q&A and discussions on caste lineages and the socio-cultural fabric of the artform. All materials provided. Light refreshments. No experience needed.
Mahalaxmi Karn is a master Mithila artist from the village of Ranti, in the Madhubani district of Bihar, India. She is notable among the young generation of Indian artists who have revolutionized and feminized the traditional folk genre known as Mithila or Madhubani art. Many of her works have a strong feminist theme.
