About

If you have an aspiring blacksmith ages 10 to 13, Shopspace is offering a class that will allow you to share the forging experience with them. The adult and child will work together on a project, combining their skills (or lack of!) to make something out of hot metal.

In this class, you will learn the basics of forging hot metal with a hammer and anvil by making a simple wall hook (or sometimes just a sculptural art piece). Students will start by hammering a point on a small round bar, bending and shaping, and finally cutting and flattening a section to receive a screw for hanging. We will cover different parts of the hammer and anvil and how they are used, and how to safely manipulate hot metal.

Note: Parent must participate as a student in class along with the child.

In this class you will be introduced to the basic blacksmithing techniques of hammering, tapering, cutting, bending, and twisting. Using these techniques and a propane forge you will heat a piece of iron to bright orange and with anvil, hammer, and tongs.
