About
Deface the Currency, the second collaborative album from the Messthetics and saxophonist James Brandon Lewis, captures a quartet fully coming into its own after extensive touring cemented their musical and emotional chemistry. Recorded largely in first or second takes at Tonal Park in Maryland after a 2025 tour, the album expands on the acclaimed 2024 debut by embracing greater risk, spontaneity, and confidence while seamlessly blending punk, free jazz, funk, and improvisation. Across seven dynamic tracks, the group balances precision with abandon, moving fluidly from ecstatic peaks to reflective moments, reflecting the deepened connection forged through constant performance. The result is a vivid, urgent statement that reveals the band not as a project or collaboration, but as a fully realized collective shaped by trust, instinct, and shared momentum.
