This 40x6-foot sculpture was the inaugural public art project of the Raleigh Arts Commission. The brilliant colors of Dale Eldred's Time Light Tower are most visible on sunny mornings (driving south towards downtown) and sunny afternoons (driving north from downtown). The tower is located on Capital Boulevard at the intersection of Capital and Wade Ave. The sculpture was commissioned as apart of Raleigh's 1992 Bicentennial, which included such improvements like widening the street, burying utility poles and planting trees along the boulevard.
