The Cupcake Shoppe
by Elliot Acosta
On the strip of restaurants and stores lining downtown Raleigh's Glenwood South district is a little boutique of artisan cupcakes. Featuring flavors that range from Margarita to Pistachio Lime, The Cupcake Shoppe has captured the imagination of Raleigh, showing the city how good these little baked treats can be.
A Raleigh native, Sara Coleman pursued a life on the road doing sales but settled back in her hometown to follow her passion to bake. Armed with family favorites and her creative staff, Sara has created recipes that have been cranking out the area's favorite frosted treats since she opened in 2007. Whether its publications across the country including the Rachel Ray Magazine that praised the bakery for its fluffy cupcakes or the cupcakes being used for Buddy Valastro's "Cake Boss Live" tour, the Cupcake Shoppe has received praise from around the country.
Marble countertops, an antique cash register and pink décor surround the main attraction, the display case for the bakery. 13 different varieties of cupcakes plus one weekly rotating flavor tempt you through their glass case. Vanilla cake with an Oreo cookie buttercream, also known as the Cookie Monster, showcases the Cupcake Shoppe's moist vanilla cake. Bringing the idea of having milk and Oreos to an icing, the delectable vanilla cupcake is then topped with a buttercream mixed with Oreo cookie crumbs. If your sweet tooth is leading you to something other than cupcakes, The Cupcake Shoppe has that covered too. Freshly baked cookies, brownies and ice cream sandwiches are ready to curb sweet cravings. To help wash down the sweet treats, The Cupcake Shoppe brews Larry's Beans coffee, which is roasted just miles away in Raleigh.
