Reason #30 for visiting Greater Raleigh during 31 Days of Art:
A change of scenery would do you good!

Have you checked out Greater Raleigh’s 31 Days of Art? So many entertaining and educational events to choose from in October in the Wake County area.

A favorite of residents and visitors alike are the tours of Historic Oakwood, just a few blocks northeast of the state capitol in downtown Raleigh. Be transported back to the late 19th century and explore the tree-lined streets as your personal tour guide directs you to houses and events of interest. The area boasts homes built in the Queen Anne style with a touch of the Victorian as well as southern charm.

By the 1890s, Oakwood had become a fashionable suburb with paved Belgian stone from Wake County granite. Thanks to the hard work of the Society for the Preservation of Historic Oakwood, most of the homes have been lovingly restored to their original state, with steep slate roofs and a rich palette of paint colors. See the home where Gregory Peck and Lauren Bacall filmed a Hollywood movie and learn the stories of a thriving merchant class neighborhood and its residents.

Then travel to Oakwood Cemetery with its winding roads, glistening stream and towering oak trees that provide a tranquil final resting place for over 28,000 residents. This is a 90-minute walking tour; be sure to wear comfortable shoes. “Every tour is an extravaganza, complete with laughter, time honored stories and FUN. Grab a group of friends and join us!”

Part of Tobacco Road Tours. Beyond the October calendar, other tour packages include Historic Raleigh, Raleigh Haunted Footsteps Ghost Tour, Raleigh Pub Crawl & Haunted Adventure, and African-American Cultural Heritage.
