As the temperature creeps into the 90’s in Raleigh, many residents and visitors alike are searching for fun and affordable substitutes for the beach where they can beat the heat.  While the ocean may be three hours away, many alternatives exist right within or near Raleigh.

For an active outdoor scene with plenty of activities, try visiting one of the lakes nearby.  Lake Wheeler has free picnic areas, a regulation volleyball court, and several different kinds of boat rentals.  Lake Johnson Park is great for fishing, has greenway trails and offers a waterfront concert series during the summer in addition to picnic shelters and boat rentals.

There’s also Silver Lake Waterpark, which for a small entry fee, can provide you with a whole days worth of fun in the sun!  Enjoy a sandy beach, five-story giant water slide, bumper boats, and a whole array of water activities.

For those who are not staying somewhere that offers a pool, there’s great news!  The City of Raleigh operates three year-round swimming facilities and five seasonal pools.  There are aquatics programs offered at three of these pools, including American Red Cross swimming lessons and water exercise classes.

These are just a few of the many ways you can beat the heat during your stay in Raleigh!
