The commissioners originally recommended Burke Square Park as "a suitable place for the Governor's House," but this recommendation was not followed. Between 1797 and 1883, the Governor had three different residences in various locations in the city. In 1883, after aggressive lobbying by Governor Thomas J. Jarvis, the governor's mansion was constructed in Burke Square Park, where it remains to this day. Local Confederate training ground during the Civil War.
