About

Originally established in 1798 and divided into four parts: two one-acre plots for citizens, one for visitors and one for Blacks (mainly slaves); now covering seven acres. Its iron fence once surrounded the North Carolina State Capitol grounds to keep out straying livestock. Among the buried is Dr. Anna J. Cooper (1858-1964), publisher of “A Voice from the South.”
