Originally a mission to teach freed Black children and send them to schools of higher education, the initial congregation occupied a building on this site in 1875. The present church was remodeled and enlarged in the 1920s by Calvin Lightner, a church elder for 62 years. The building is distinguished by its Gothic details, tower and slate roof.
