James H. Harris (1832-1891) was freed from slavery in 1848, was apprenticed to a carpenter and later opened his own business in Raleigh. After attending college and traveling abroad, Harris returned to Raleigh, attending the state’s 1865 Freedmen’s Convention and later constitutional convention. He was a founder of North Carolina’s Republican Party and was elected a state legislator. Harris is remembered as a local, state and national leader in Reconstruction politics: he is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery.
