About

A premier example of Gothic Revival style, the present church was completed in 1910 on the site of two previous buildings. Its walls have been noted for some of the best brickwork crafted by Blacks in Raleigh, and its sanctuary has been called one of Raleigh’s most beautiful. The church has the oldest Black congregation in Wake County—originally formed by enslaved persons who had worshiped at Edenton St. United Methodist Church. In 1865 the church hosted an historic Freedmen’s Convention.
