Recycled Costumes and Bearded Ladies

October is lapsing at the speed of light, and while I feel anxious about the dwindling time that I have left to enjoy pumpkin-flavored everything, this also means that the All Hallow’s Eve creeps ever closer. If you’re anything like me you find yourself fleeing in terror from the amassment of sexy fairytale princess outfits that linger around every corner, but you can quell your costume fears because this weekend is Raleigh Little Theater’s bi-annual costume sale. Costumes will be available from past RLT shows including East of the Sun and West of the Moon, The Boy Friend, Cinderella and my personal favorite, Rocky Horror Show.
I was in the audience at RLT’s Rocky Horror show last month -- I may or may not have done the Time Warp in the aisle -- and it was an absurd spectacle, abundant with costumes that one would kill for. If your festive theme is along the lines of “sweet transvestite,” then you are in serious luck.
The Raleigh Little Theater costume extravaganza seems like the perfect situation in which to grab some one-of-a-kind garb to debut at one of the Rialto’s famous Rocky Horror Picture Show’s midnight showings. While this cult classic shows every Friday night, the Halloween screenings draw a record number of dedicated fans, bedecked in some seriously rad attire. Near the end of October a line of people numbering in the hundreds stretches down the block waiting for a seat inside the theater where audience participation will ensue. From what I hear, things get a little out of hand in the best way possible. As a slide projected at the beginning of the show reads: “if you’re not offended, you’re just not paying attention.”
CAM’s Fright Night at the Museum on October 27th will provide yet another crucial opportunity to sport your spectacular guise. If you haven’t bought a ticket yet, you should probably get on that. The “carnival of the bizarre and beautiful” will take place at the Contemporary Art Museum in downtown Raleigh. The night will include, among other things, food trucks, a three-ring circus of freaks and oddities, and a costume contest presided over by a bearded lady. Need I say more?
