New Sports Developments in Raleigh, N.C.

Here are the major new developments that are contributing to Greater Raleigh's stature as a premier sports destination.
 

Calvert Sports Academy & Development Center (Holly Springs)

The Calvert project in Holly Springs will be the largest ice sports facility in the Raleigh area. It will feature four regulation NHL-sized ice rinks for hockey, figure skating, synchronized skating and other ice sports, including curling. Seating capacity for each rink will range from 250-2,500.

Also included: a 2,500- to 3,500-square-foot gym/workout center; a dining commons; an entertainment area; sports medicine facilities; classroom space to accommodate 240 students; and residential/dorm space to accommodate 190 students. Groundbreaking is planned for summer 2025, with an anticipated opening of fall 2027. Facility owner: Calvert Ice Sports.

 

Eagles Landing Park & Recreation Center (Holly Springs)

Eagles Landing will be a signature multi-sports complex in Holly Springs. The indoor portion of the project will feature four regulation high school basketball courts, which can covert to eight regulation high school volleyball courts. It will also be an ideal location for pickleball. Outdoors, the complex will include two artificial-turf, multi-purpose fields (soccer, lacrosse), two basketball courts, six pickleball courts and a skate park. Groundbreaking for Eagles Landing is set for spring 2025 with an expected opening in late 2027. Facility owner: Town of Holly Springs.

 

Lenovo Center (Raleigh)

Lenovo Center, home of the NHL Carolina Hurricanes and North Carolina State University men’s basketball, is one of the nation’s premier sports and entertainment venues. Lenovo Center is set to begin a $300 million enhancement project beginning in the summer of 2025. The project will continue through the summers of 2026 and 2027, with completion expected by fall 2027. Details of the enhancement plan will be announced in the coming months. Pleasant Park Phase 2 (Apex)

3400 Pleasant Plains Rd.
Apex, NC 27502

Pleasant Park, which opened last year with six multi-purpose fields and more, is already preparing for phase 2. While the first phase focused primarily on soccer and lacrosse, this next phase will focus on baseball and softball for both youth and adults, along with cross country. Phase 2 will feature four baseball/softball fields, all with lights and artificial turf. The complex will also include bleacher seating at each field, plus batting cages, bathrooms and concessions. In addition to the ballfields, Pleasant Park will have a new 5k cross country course capable of hosting local, state and regional meets. Construction of phase 2 is set to begin in late 2025, with completion targeted for 2027. Facility owner: Town of Apex.

 

SWING Racquet + Paddle (Raleigh)

Once open, this signature project will be the largest racquet sports complex of its kind in the world. It will feature four racquet sports—tennis, pickleball, padel and beach tennis, with a generous mix of indoor, outdoor and outdoor covered courts. Groundbreaking took place in summer 2024, with a projected opening set for fall 2026.

Wendell Athletic Field Complex (Wendell)

The new complex in Wendell will have five total fields—one specifically for football (natural grass, lighted) and four multi-purpose fields for soccer, lacrosse, field hockey and other sports with similar facility requirements. Three of these fields will be turf, and one natural grass. The four multi-purpose fields will not be lighted. Also included in the plans: one concession stand, restrooms, shelters and on-site parking. The project is currently in the design phase. Construction is expected to begin in fiscal year 2026 and conclude in fiscal year 2027. This complex will also connect to the future Buffalo Creek Greenway being designed by the Town of Wendell. Yeargan Park (Garner)

Yeargan Park will be a game-changer for the Town of Garner. The centerpiece of Yeargan will be four lighted, multi-purpose playing fields. Two will be artificial turf, and two natural grass. The fields will be ideal for soccer, lacrosse, flag football, football, field hockey, ultimate (frisbee) and more. Yeargan will also include a playground, picnic shelter, restrooms and plenty of parking. Construction begins first-quarter 2025 with completion planned for third-quarter 2026.
