Greater Raleigh is emerging as a dynamic hub for national governing body (NGB) programming, where innovation meets inclusion and strategic leadership. This fall, the destination hosted a trio of events reflecting the evolving landscape of sports. Each event, while distinct in its focus, shared a common thread: advancing sports through new formats, thoughtful governance and expanded access for athletes of all abilities.
On Oct. 17-19, the Raleigh Convention Center hosted the Southeast Regional Boccia Tournament (a USA Boccia Level 3 Sanctioned Regional Tournament). Boccia is a fun and competitive sport that involves multiple balls being thrown to try to get them as close as possible to the white "jack" ball. Originally designed as a sport for people with cerebral palsy, it is now a Paralympic sport open to individuals with disabilities affecting motor skills.
The tournament is the first of its kind in the Southeast, marking a milestone for adaptive sports in the region. Additionally, the event included a pre-assessment process for athletes not yet classified in the USA Boccia system, making it a welcoming entry point for newcomers and a competitive platform for seasoned players.
USA Climbing hosted a special athlete meet-and-greet at Triangle Rock Club - Salvage Yard on Fri., Oct., 24. From 4-5:30pm, fans and youth climbers were able to connect with Emma Hunt (Paris 2024 Olympian), Sophie Curcio (National Team athlete) and Nekaia Sanders (National Development Team athlete). The event was free for Triangle Rock Club members or included with a day pass, and attendees were encouraged to bring climbing shoes and items for autographs.
The visit coincided with USA Climbing’s board meeting, hosted in part by Ponysaurus Brewing Co. Raleigh, where leaders gathered to discuss the sport’s future. As the national governing body for competitive climbing, USA Climbing supports athletes and events nationwide while promoting inclusivity, sportsmanship and environmental responsibility.
USA Baseball rounded out Raleigh’s NGB programming this fall with two major esports tournaments at the N.C. State Gaming and Esports Lab, located on Centennial Campus. The WBSC eBaseball™ Series kicked off with the USA Finals taking place Nov. 7-8, where top U.S. players competed for a final qualifying spot. The series concluded in-person with the Super Round and Finals, Nov. 8-9, showcasing eight elite POWER PROS players from around the globe, vying for the title of World Champion.
