As warmer weather arrives in Raleigh, N.C.RDU International Airport is abuzz with exciting developments and expansions. With a steadfast commitment to enhancing the travel experience and serving as a vital gateway to Raleigh and its surrounding areas, RDU continues to soar to new heights.

Record-breaking growth

The momentum of growth at RDU shows no signs of slowing down. In January 2024 alone, the airport welcomed over 967,600 travelers, marking a remarkable 10.5% increase compared to the same period last year. This surge in passenger traffic underscores RDU's pivotal role as a bustling travel hub, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting year in air travel.

New international destination

Adding to its extensive roster of nonstop flights, RDU is set to introduce new destinations to its network. Copa Airlines is slated to launch nonstop flights from Panama City (PTY) to RDU starting June 21. With four weekly flights aboard a Boeing 737-800, this service will open doors from Central and South America and the Caribbean. Aeromexico will launch flights from Mexico City (MEX) July 1.

These additions come on the heels of other expansions, including Air France's inaugural flight from Paris (CDG) in October 2023 and Lufthansa's service from Frankfurt (FRA), Germany, beginning June 6, 2024. With these exciting developments, RDU is poised to become even more interconnected on the global stage, providing travelers with an unparalleled range of options for their journeys.

New routes and airlines

In addition to its international reach, RDU continues to strengthen its domestic connections with the introduction of new routes and airlines. Avelo Airlines is set to launch nonstop service from Albany (ALB), N.Y., on May 10, providing access from a previously unserved destination to RDU. Frontier Airlines is expanding its offerings with nonstop flights from Boston (BOS), New York-LaGuardia (LGA), Miami (MIA), Chicago (ORD) and Tampa (TPA), starting April 11, 2024. Frontier will also add a nonstop flight from Milwaukee (MKE) starting May 16, 2024.

Meanwhile, Breeze Airways is set to debut service from San Diego (SAN) on April 30, along with routes from White Plains (HPN), N.Y.; Syracuse (SYR); Burlington (BTV), Vt.; and Portland (PWM), Maine, in May.

Sustainability initiatives

At RDU, sustainability is a core value guiding every aspect of operations. The airport recently announced plans to expand its electric vehicle fleet with the purchase of six additional zero-emission electric buses. Set to be in service by fall, these buses will join the existing fleet, further reducing the airport's carbon footprint and promoting eco-friendly transportation options for travelers.

Moreover, RDU continues to make strides in sustainability with the implementation of innovative practices across its operations. From energy-efficient infrastructure to waste reduction initiatives, the airport is committed to minimizing its environmental impact while enhancing operational efficiency.

Looking ahead

RDU is projected to welcome more than 15.5 million passengers during the next 12 months. With new airlines, destinations, dining options and capital projects on the horizon, RDU remains dedicated to providing a world-class guest experience and serving as a vital economic engine for the region.
