With summer well in the rearview and fall in full swing, RDU International Airport continues to make strides in enhancing the travel experience for visitors. Following a record-breaking season with over 1.4 million travelers in Aug. 2024 and a historic 188,000 over Labor Day weekend, RDU remains committed to expanding its offerings and improving convenience for travelers.

Air service growth

RDU has expanded its international travel options significantly this year, with new nonstop flights from Frankfurt, Germany; Panama City, Panama; and Mexico City, Mexico. This increased connectivity marks a record number of international destinations served by the airport. Starting in May 2025, Air Canada will increase its nonstop service from Montreal from seven to 14 weekly flights.

Additionally, RDU will launch its first nonstop route from Calgary, Alberta, with WestJet beginning June 9, 2025. Service will operate three days a week through Oct. 13, connecting visitors from the Calgary International Airport (YYC), a gateway from the Canadian Rockies and beyond. YYC also offers preclearance for U.S.-bound passengers, streamlining the travel process.

New dining options in Terminal 2

RDU recently welcomed two new dining options to Terminal 2: Crawford’s Genuine and Carolina Craft! Crawford’s Genuine showcases American cuisine with a North Carolina twist, curated by acclaimed chef Scott Crawford and highlighting fresh, local flavors. Carolina Craft, located near Gate C12, offers an open-air bar with a selection of local craft beers, cocktails and customizable charcuterie boards. These openings are part of a larger dining overhaul, with 10 more restaurants planned for 2025 to elevate RDU’s culinary offerings.

Runway and expansion updates

RDU is also advancing its infrastructure with federal support for key expansion projects. A $12 million grant from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law will fund improvements to Terminal 2’s ticketing lobby, baggage claim, security and international arrivals areas. Complementing this, a $10 million FAA grant will aid in constructing the new Runway 5L-23R, which will ensure the airport’s connectivity with West Coast and transatlantic destinations.

From enhanced air service to new dining and major infrastructure projects, RDU is focused on creating a world-class travel experience that will serve visitors well into the future.
