School’s out, the sun’s high and adventure is calling. From hands-on science and sky-high slides to vintage carousels and splash zones, these five family-friendly spots across the Raleigh area promise memory-making fun all summer long.
Gipson Play Plaza at Dix Park
A playground reimagined on a grand scale, Gipson Play Plaza sprawls across 18 acres on the edge of Dorothea Dix Park, inviting kids to climb, splash and explore in every direction.
Towering play structures stretch into the skyline, while whimsical water features offer cool relief on hot afternoons. Families will find shaded picnic areas, rolling green hills, and skyline views of downtown Raleigh—a perfect backdrop for both energetic play and easy relaxation. It’s an urban escape designed with wonder in mind.

North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences
Spanning four floors and two wings, this museum offers a deep dive into everything from prehistoric life and space exploration to the ecosystems of North Carolina. Kids can visit the Living Conservatory to come face-to-face with butterflies, turtles, tarantulas and even a two-toed sloth, plus peer into working research labs or dig into hands-on discovery zones filled with fossils, bugs and bones. The WRAL 3D Theater and naturalist center add extra layers of wonder, making it a hit for curious minds of all ages.
This summer, don’t miss “Blue Whales,” a new special exhibition that opened in June and runs through January 2026 (ticket required).
- Address: 11 W. Jones St., Raleigh, NC 27601

Pullen Park
An iconic Raleigh space opened since 1887, Pullen Park still delights with old-school charm and modern-day play. Families can ride the pint-sized train, take a spin on the beautifully restored carousel or pedal across the lake in a boat built for two. Shady walking paths and picnic spots make it easy to slow down and stay awhile. With just the right mix of nostalgia and open-air fun, it’s a classic summer outing.
- Address: 520 Ashe Ave., Raleigh, NC 27606
- Day trip pro-tip: Nearby Village District has ice cream offerings (Goodberry's Frozen Custard; Jeni's Ice Cream), plus plenty of shopping and restaurants to keep the whole family happy.
Marbles Kids Museum
Every square inch of Marbles—one of the state's most visited tourism attractions geared towards young ones—buzzes with activity, from pint-sized cityscapes and water play zones to imaginative exhibits where kids can climb, build, shop and experiment.
Designed for play with purpose, this downtown museum makes learning feel like an adventure, especially on steamy summer days. Parents will appreciate the thoughtful layout, hands-on activities for all ages and on-site cafe. It's the kind of place where an hour turns into an afternoon before anyone notices.
- Address: 201 E. Hargett St., Raleigh, NC 27601
- Don't miss the Marbles IMAX, either!
Downtown Cary Park
This vibrant new park in the heart of Cary balances energy and elegance, with artful landscaping, imaginative play zones and a spacious lawn ideal for impromptu picnics or family games.
A multilevel play structure inspired by a treehouse anchors the fun, while nearby splash areas and climbing walls keep kids happily on the move. Adults can grab a coffee or beer from a local vendor to enjoy while strolling through native gardens while little ones explore.
